From the reinstatement of federal patriotic education mandates in early 2025 to the systemic overhaul of federal museum exhibits and historical signage throughout 2026, we are witnessing a concerted effort to sanitize our shared past. When the complexities of Black history, the brutal truths of slavery, and the nuanced realities of the Civil War are quietly removed from museum walls and public school curricula, literature becomes our vital sanctuary for truth.
